The New Normal has expanded much in the last few years, and you can now access our free non-judgemental peer support in other parts of the world! We feel that the best form of therapy is to talk to others with similar life experiences, no matter where you’re from or where you live.

Find out more below about our partners TNN Hong Kong and TNN Americas, and the work they are doing in their regions.

You can learn more and sign-up for our French-speaking Good Grief meeting in Parler Panser.

*TNN Hong Kong and TNN Americas are independent registered charities in their regions, but align with The New Normal’s mission, ethos and peer support delivery model.

What is it?

The New Normal Hong Kong is a charity that connects adults through their mental health and grief. We aim to help and support one another through life's difficult moments.

Our meetings are peer-to-peer, which means there are no professionals, just people sharing their own experiences. We feel that the best form of therapy is simply speaking. We facilitate conversations between individuals who find themselves with similar experiences.

Nobody should ever feel alone, and there is always somebody who can empathetically relate to your story.

TNN Hong Kong provide free non-judgemental space in English and Cantonese.

Why did it start?

The New Normal Hong Kong has offered peer-to-peer support meetings since January 2022, following the relocation of Good Grief attendee, Jess, to Hong Kong.

Jess has continued to spearhead and build up TNN Hong Kong since, and explains her story:

Hi, my name is Jess. You’ll find me hosting Good Grief in Hong Kong. My Dad, Neil, died in September 2020. He didn’t die from Covid, but he died during Covid in the U.K., which meant there was much less support for at-home care. I struggled to cope with his end-of-life care and death and sought help quite soon after he died.

I was told that unless I was in crisis, the wait time would be six months for talking therapy, with an alternative to go private. By chance, I found TNN Charity when a friend reshared a post by Ben and Jack, the founders. I joined their online peer support groups from lockdown in the U.K.

All I needed at the time was someone to say “I was you 1/2/6 years ago, and I promise you things will become less painful in time and better memories will return”. And for me, this is the value of peer support. Normal people using their own experiences to help each other.

Six months after joining my first peer support group, I moved to Hong Kong. And one year after joining that peer support group, we launched our Good Grief meetings in Hong Kong in January 2022.

Désirée joined the team as one of TNN Hong Kong’s early volunteers, and has become a Meeting Host in both Cantonese and English-speaking spaces. Here they share about their experience:

“As a Hong Konger, I understand the unique challenges that come with living in a bustling city where it's easy to feel lonely and disconnected.

I first came across the New Normal charity when I returned to Hong Kong after being away for some time. I was immediately drawn to the charity's mission of providing accessible mental health support to those in need and was inspired to volunteer.

As a host of the peer support group, I am passionate about creating a safe and supportive space where individuals can come together to share their experiences, connect with others who understand, and receive the care and compassion they deserve.

In a city where accessible support for mental health is unfortunately limited, I believe that it is crucial for us to come together as a community and support one another. That's why The New Normal peer support group, to me, is so important. It provides a free and confidential platform where people can connect with others who understand, share their thoughts and feelings, and receive support from a community that truly cares.”

Why did it start?

TNN Americas launched in July 2023, with a team of people with lived experience from across the United States, South America and Canada. The team shares:

“We all have lived experience of loss and have found great comfort and healing through community. Our experiences have instilled in us a belief that accessible mental health care is a right, not a privilege, and we are working together to bring peer-to-peer grief and mental health support to the Western Hemisphere.”
